Cholesterol Levels

Cholesterol levels, According to the American Heart Association, are divided into three components that need to be looked at when measuring cholesterol levels: the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), and the overall blood cholesterol.

While LDL is considered to be the bad cholesterol for its tendency to stick to artery walls and should be below 100 mg/dl, the HDL cholesterol is considered the good cholesterol for its cleansing properties and should be kept above 40mg/dl. The overall cholesterol levels should not exceed 200mg/dl.

The ratio between LDL and HDL is not less important and should also be monitored to make sure it is not too high even if your LDL cholesterol levels are below 100 mg/dl.
