All About Lipoproteins

Lipoproteins are cholesterol’s building blocks, which are also responsible for cell building in the body. There is the LDL cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein also referred to as the bad cholesterol as it tends to deposit within artery walls and promote atherosclerosis.

There is the HDL cholesterol which is the high-density lipoprotein also referred to as the good cholesterol for its ability to cleanse the arteries from excess LDL cholesterol. While the LDL cholesterol should be kept below 100mg/dl, the HDL cholesterol must be above 40mg/dl. This is why lowering overall cholesterol level below 200mg/dl is not enough. To prevent atherosclerosis and its dangerous implications one also needs to keep LDL and HDL in a healthy ratio.

Although there are medicinal therapies such as the intake of statin drugs that can manage to keep the lipoproteins in a good LDL HDL ratio, there are far better natural alternatives to raise HDL and lower LDL without the side effects.

The following articles are aimed at helping you better understand Lipoproteins:

Mannose Binding Lectin, High Cholesterol And Heart Disease

Recent studies published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine have found a link between low levels of a protein called Mannose binding lectin (MBL) high cholesterol levels and heart disease. Mannose binding lectin (MBL) is a protein produced by your liver that works with your immune system to help your body defend itself against invaders.
Mannose […]

Metabolic Syndrome and Low HDL Cholesterol

Metabolic syndrome, or syndrome X, is a name for a combination of health disorders that serve as risk factors for a heart disease. The five conditions that mark metabolic syndrome are: having low levels of HDL or High Density Lipoprotein (below 40 mg/dl for men and below 50 mg/dl for women), high blood pressure, high […]

How HDL Lowers Cholesterol

It is a universally known fact that HDL or High-density lipoprotein cholesterol is the good cholesterol as it is responsible for cleansing the arteries from excess of the bad LDL cholesterol thus helps preventing atherosclerosis, heart disease and strokes. But this cleansing function of the HDL cholesterol is not so simple. Understanding exactly how the […]

Lower LDL Cholesterol and Raise HDL Cholesterol

Lowering cholesterol does not only mean getting your overall cholesterol levels below the 200mg/dl benchmark, in order to successfully reduce the risks of having atherosclerosis, heart attacks or strokes as a result of unmanaged cholesterol levels, you must also focus on lowering the LDL cholesterol and raising the HDL cholesterol levels.
The LDL cholesterol or the […]

Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein (Oxidized LDL ) and Lower Cholesterol

Oxidized LDL or oxidized low-density lipoprotein, is a different type of the known LDL cholesterol also called the bad cholesterol. Having high levels of LDL cholesterol is dangerous if only due to its tendency to build up within blood vessel walls thus enhancing atherosclerosis or the narrowing of the arteries. It appears however, that in […]

Lower Cholesterol Lp(a) and LDL

It is a well-known fact that in order to lower cholesterol, one must focus on reducing the low-density lipoprotein, also known as the LDL cholesterol or the bad cholesterol for its tendency to build up within the blood vessels and promote atherosclerosis. Another objective, besides the lowering of overall cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, is to […]

Keeping Lower Cholesterol Levels: The Good and The Bad About LDL

We all know to dangers involved with having high levels of LDL, the low-density lipoprotein. LDL is also referred to as the bad cholesterol since it deposits cholesterol into artery walls resulting in the narrowing of the arteries, a condition called atherosclerosis. With that said, LDL some other positive sides. It appears that LDL has […]

Lower Cholesterol LDL VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoprotein)

Lipoproteins are particles of fat, cholesterol and proteins responsible for carrying triglycerides, cholesterol and other lipids to various tissues and other parts of your body.
There are in fact three kinds of lipoproteins: the high density lipoprotein also called the HDL or the good cholesterol as it lenses the arteries from cholesterol build up, preventing atheroscleriosis. […]

LDL Receptors and Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Level

Basically cholesterol is a highly essential substance required to produce vitamin D, certain hormones and for the building of cell membranes. The LDL cholesterol also referred to as the bad cholesterol, should be kept below 100 mg/dl otherwise, its accumulation in artery walls can lead to plaque build up resulting in atherosclerosis or the hardening […]

HDL Cholesterol Forms Immunity Against Parasites

Recent study has discovered that HDL also referred to as the good cholesterol for its ability to prevent the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from being built up in the arteries, has another important function in addition to its ability to help lowering overall cholesterol.
With the help of two specific proteins, it seems that HDL […]

Smoking Lowers HDL Cholesterol

In addition to being one of the primary risk factors for heart disease, contributing to more than 20% of total death for coronary diseases, cigarette smoking has been proven to significantly lower HDL cholesterol, damage the lining of blood vessels and increase clotting in the blood. All of which can directly result in atherosclerosis or […]

Hypolipoproteinemia and Low Cholesterol

Hypolipoproteinemia is a rare condition, where the LDL blood cholesterol level, is extremely low. In spite of the rarity of the condition, it should not be taken lightly. Now. You must be thinking: isn’t lowering the LDL cholesterol in the blood a good thing? Well, it’s not. Let me explain. In normal conditions, your blood […]

LDL and HDL Cholesterol - The Numbers, The Ratio and The Risk

Basically, there are two types of cholesterol and understanding the difference between the two, and the figures behind the two types, is the first step for taking responsibility over your body, lowering your cholesterol to a level that eliminates the risk involved and having your blood cholesterol level under control.
What is cholesterol? Well, basically it’s […]
