Familial Lipid Disorders and High Cholesterol
A familial lipid disorder is a rare hereditary condition, in which a person suffers from high blood cholesterol levels and often from high levels of triglycerides, resulting from genetic reasons and not directly from the wrong eating habits or lack of exercise as in the case with individuals who didn’t inherit this condition. Familiar lipid disorder can often lead to coronary artery disease (CAD). Because of the rarity of familial lipid disorder only in cases where a strong evidence for high cholesterol history in your family or family history of coronary artery disease exist, or in extreme cases of high cholesterol readings, a specialized doctor may suspect you have familial lipid disorder and make the required tests.
Most hereditary lipid disorders are common among generations of families with obesity problems. Some familial lipid disorders can directly result in over production of cholesterol by your body. Another condition called Familial Combined Hyperlipidemia can also lead to high cholesterol levels including high triglyceride levels. Another hereditary condition called Familial Defective Apolipoprotein B-100, can cause the LDL blood cholesterol (low density lipoprotein also called the “bad” cholesterol) to increase and also raise total cholesterol levels.
There are several other hereditary conditions some rare and some more common that lead to elevated cholesterol levels. The good part about these genetic lipid disorders is that they can serve as a good warning for family members who share a history of these disorders, to take the necessary steps to monitor cholesterol regularly and to do what ever it take to reduce blood cholesterol levels and prevent the dangerous condition such as heart disease or stroke that result from it.
Regular blood tests and physical exams can pre-determine the symptoms of familial lipid disorder, although again because of the rarity of the condition only in cases where physical signs indicate the existence of familiar lipid disorder or if you’re having extremely high cholesterol levels, or if one of your family members was diagnosed with this disorder, you may also suffer from this condition.
Regardless of having a genetic lipid disorder, cholesterol levels must regularly be monitored and whether you were diagnosed with familial lipid disorder or not, having high cholesterol levels is a dangerous condition that must be address with sincerity. This is truer if you have a genetic tendency for high cholesterol. If this is the case, low cholesterol die, vitamins and mineral, special herbs and antioxidants combined with regular physical activity can almost guarantee the lowering of cholesterol levels, minimizing the risk of having a heart disease or stroke without the side effects of statin drugs.
