Omacor® Reduces Triglyceride Levels and Lowers Cholesterol

Omacor®, a new lowering cholesterol medication (FDA approved in 2004) developed by Pronova Biocare and Reliant Pharmaceuticals, and released to the market in 2005, contains high levels of concentrated omega-3 fatty acid. The Omega 3 fatty acids including acid ethyl esters are aimed at lowering high triglyceride levels.

Triglycerides are chains of high-energy fatty acids that supply energy for the functioning of body cells. When your blood contains very high levels of triglycerides it causes a decrease in HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol responsible for removing the bad LDL cholesterol from the arteries, preventing most high cholesterol chronic conditions. The reduction of HDL leads to elevated LDL cholesterol levels and in total overall cholesterol. High levels of triglycerides can also promote obesity, heart diseases and other chronic conditions. The lowering of triglyceride levels therefore promotes the lowering of cholesterol, thus eliminating the risk associated with high cholesterol levels and extreme levels of triglycerides.

Omega 3 fatty acids can also be taken in a supplement form, or by food containing Omega 3 fatty acids such as Salmon, Tuna fish and Flaxseed oil as it has been proven to benefit heart function among many other benefits. Omacor®, contains eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexanoic acid which are more concentrated and more potent form of Omega 3 fatty acids as the manufacturers of the drug claim, then Omega 3 fatty acids provided by food or supplements.

Omacor®, also reduces the Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL). VLDL is another bad cholesterol type. Normal levels of VLDL are 40mg/dl. When there is excess amount of VLDL in the blood, the transportation of lipids in the blood is slowed resulting in the clogging of the arteries or atherosclerosis which can in turn lead to heart diseases and strokes.

Like all lowering cholesterol drugs, Omacor® comes with a line of side effect some are uncomfortable like rashes, other may promote dangerous conditions such as the elevation of LDL cholesterol.

A natural approach to lowering cholesterol (low cholesterol well balanced diet, including natural vitamins and minerals, exercise and relaxation techniques) is a good alternative to statin drugs. The natural approach to reduce cholesterol has no side effects, can lower your cholesterol and triglycerides naturally and significantly contribute to your over whole health.
